Chapter 01
Crowns: what gets chosen, and why
A crown is a cap placed over a tooth, most often after a root canal, and the practice offers three kinds. Porcelain-fused-to-metal is tooth coloured and a common middle choice. Gold is the most durable of the three and tends to go on molars, where nobody sees it and the bite is hardest. All-ceramic or all-porcelain, with no metal at all, is kept for the front smile zone, where matching the tooth exactly is the whole job.
Which one gets used is less a preference than a decision about where the tooth sits and what it has to do every day.

The two visits a crown takes
The first visit is the prep, about an hour and a half in the chair. By the end of it an impression has gone off to the lab and a temporary crown is fitted, so you're not walking around with a bare tooth while the real one is made.
The final crown is seated after about ten days, once the lab has finished it. Two visits, a short wait in between, and a temporary that does the job until the permanent one is ready.
Chapter 03
Implants, and the tooth next door
An implant is a titanium post fused to the jaw bone, acting as an artificial root for a replacement tooth. The real case for it is a case about the teeth on either side: a three-unit bridge means shaving down two healthy neighbouring teeth to anchor a false one, and an implant doesn't ask that of them.
For a lower denture that won't sit still, two or three implants can be enough to stabilise it, turning a plate you have to manage into one you mostly stop thinking about.
Dentures and partials are maintenance, not a finish line
Dentures and partials get replaced at least every five years and checked at least once a year, twice for some patients. That's not a one-time fitting; it's an ongoing relationship with a device that has to keep matching a mouth that keeps changing.
A reline is part of that maintenance: an in-office reline is softer and meant as a temporary fix, where a lab reline is firmer and meant to last. Fillings, bonding, porcelain veneers, removable prosthodontics and implant restorations round out the rest of what falls under restorative work here.
